Rehabilitation of Historic Pierce NFC

McCall & Associates, Inc. provided design, project management and construction administration services for the Pierce County Commission for this portion of a three-building project.  This project included a new library, the rehabilitation the historic NFC Building, and the renovation/ expansion of the multi-purpose center and gymnasium.  All three portions of the projects were built using a combination of Department of Corrections inmate labor crews and subcontractors for major or specialized disciplines.

This historic structure, built in 1905, was first known as the Presbyterian Institute and then the original Blackshear High School.  Our team worked closely with the Department of Corrections management and crews to salvage and save historic architectural details of the building such as the Ludowici roof tiles, the balustrade over the porch, and the terracotta column capitals. The roof tiles, in particular, were painstakingly removed from the building, carefully stacked and stored on site, and reapplied to the roof.

The three structures included in this project are connected by a courtyard surrounded by wrought iron fences.  The courtyard provides a casual outdoor setting for a multipurpose community space.

This project was a joint financial effort between Pierce County, the United States Department of Agriculture, the State Library Board and the GA Department of Corrections.
